Celldweller – Shapeshifter
In the past decade, there’s really no one that has been conistently as good as Scott Albert/Dread/Klayton/Celldweller/etc… Even though he changes his name once every album or two, Scott’s output has been excellent. Today marks the release of another Internet single entitled ‘Shapeshifter’ that was put out for a video game and was throated by a rap group called ‘Styles of Beyond’.
I was excited to see it, but my initial thought is that this one belongs squarely in a game and isn’t really exciting for much more than 30 seconds at a time. It’s cool, but it’s not as quality as the celldweller disc that was released 2 years ago. Lyrically, it reminds me a ton of something that would be played in the soundtrack to the Fast and the Furious. Sonically, it marks a further progression into the rap/metal/industrial/techno blend that Celldweller has been toying with as of late. It’s also worth the publicity that it gives celldweller given that SOB are getting a ton of press lately due to their work with Mike S. from Linkin Park on the Fort Minor Project.
The track belongs in a mix and doesn’t stand well by itself. Don’t get me wrong, it’s worth getting @ .99, but I’m looking forward to seeing it as part of a larger group of songs in the next release.
