Heard recently around the house:

- We’re getting shots in advance of our trip to Eithiopia. Aidan got Hepatitis A and B shots and this was our conversation:

“Daddy, I got titus A and B shots.”

“Really?”

“yeah, and I got them here and here (points to arms)”

“Yeah, and C shots too!”

Aidan (shocked): “I don’t have mommy’s eyes. I have Aidan’s eyes!”

And, so, I got bit by a spider this week . On the old 1-10 scale, pain around the bite has been around the 7 or 8. My arm looks sun burnt and is swelled up like…oh, I don’t know…a big red clown nose . I’d take a picture, but I don’t think anyone would want that. No word on what kind of bite it is, it just is painful and sollen

On Easter, our church sets up a cross in the foyer with the dried palm branches from Palm Sunday sitting around the cross, and a white sheet draped around the shoulders of the cross.

Aidan, in his 3 year old mischevious-ness decided to go up and start touching the cross just as we needed to go. I picked him up and started to walk towards the door when he reached out desperately for the cross and said ‘I need my Jesus!!!’

Indeed.

Today was, in no uncertain terms, hellish – divingly so. MJ is sick. Aidan is better and so am I, and Aidan is in the habbit of waking up way before dawn now. First some highlights of today’s coversation with Aidan:

On getting a snack:

“I want Cereal! That’s NOT Cereal, that’s Cherrios!”

On apologizing after getting in trouble:

“I’m sorry”

“Why are you sorry Aidan?”

“I’m sorry because I want you to be happy. I love you daddy!”

On What he wants to be when he grows up:

“I want to be an astronaut and play music.”

Today was a battle of inches. It started around 5:50 this morning with Aidan getting up to go potty and wanting to wake up for the day. Melissa is sick and so I flew solo for most of the day. During the midst of the day there were a ton of time outs, a couple of spankings and a few stern talks; we’re firm believers in a strata of discipline. Tonight, I may have bit off more than I could chew in starting to get rid of his pacificer by cutting the tip of it down. Needless to say, he isn’t going to be right away and notices things are a bit different.

Tonight I also thought about how God sees us. While I was sitting with him, weary and sinking into despair about the length of my day I thought about how God sees us and about how, as a perfect God, how much he may get frustrated at our behavior and yet still loves us. How some days as we try and learn lessons changing us becomes a battle of inches. For Aidan, my ultimate goal is an individual who loves and respects authority and who does things with integrity. For God, the ultimate goal is fitting us for heaven, in technical terms to sanctify us.

Along the way there are huges lessons that are learned – learning to go potty, eating solid food, learning to read – but there are also days that are battles that gain only inches on the way to adulthood; the only results of which are tears, disciplines and sorrow at the end of the day. In these days, it’s important to think about the final product.

Days like today make me look at my father and God with tons more respect that had before today started.

Aidan came by work today with MJ to visit for lunch and to go trolling for some of the food to be had (today was the apex, if you will, of food at work) and I mentioned to someone that there really wasn’t a day that he didn’t make us laugh.

Seriously, living with a three year old is like having a stand up comic in Bob the builder pull ups. He understands words and knows meaning but hasn’t quite got the idea of thinking through an action yet; he just talks…alot, and it’s fun to be around.

We just wish we could get some of these things down. This may be spun into another who separate blog, but for now it’s a category.

Our first four things heard at the house:

“Mommy” (with arms crossed above his head) “I’m an ‘X’; you need to put me on the refridgerator”

(while running into the bathroom while I’m doing my thing) “Daddy, I’m watching you peeing! You’re doing a great job! We’re at home!”

After calling him ‘Monkey’ – a pet name for him:

“I’m not a monkey, I’m an Aidan!”

In the midst of an argument in the car between MJ and me:

“Daddy, Mommy, CALM DOWN!”
