Music/Music Reviews

All about another facination…music

Speaking of worship music…

Am I the only one that thinks David Crowder writes horrible music to sing along to?  At three points recently, his name and music came up and how hard it was to follow.  Don’t get me wrong, the songs are fun to listen to and are really quite good, but I don’t see ‘Beautiful Collision’ being viable in a church setting…really, what does it mean?

I think he’s talented but I think he needs to write a bit more singable songs…

It’s hard out there being a pimp.

Enough with the heavy posts, it’s time to bust some caps in a server.

2 down, one more to go.

We’ve passed the half way point of the academic summer and my ‘Summer of websites’ is coming along well.  I just sent the second of three sites are now released into the world.

This one is an mp3 store for one of my favorite bands/artists – Bill Mallonee and the Vigilantes of Love.  In an effort to get an extensive back catalog into distribution again, I took all 15 of his studio albums and put them up as mp3s (320Kbps VBR).

The php script I used is the 1-2-3 Music Store from Easybe.com.  It’s good, in fact it works really well for this application, but a caveat is that the documentation is sparse; you need to do some digging to make it work for you.  Not bad, but there is some feeling of accomplishment that comes with making something work, I think, well.

Anyway, let me know what you think.  I know a few of you all are VOL fans, so enjoy!

Here’s the link.

Normally, I tend to not chase these kinds of things down but an online friend, David over at Loud Time ’tagged’ me. I really liked his explanation as well that this is one of thsoe memes I’ll let slip past because I feel special to be tagged and it is about music which is something that is a horrible pain (haha) for me to talk aobut. The goal is to list seven songs that I’m currently in to and six friends to tag.  Let’s hop to it.

1. ‘Evolution’ - Odyssee off ‘In Search of Sunrise 4: Latin America’: I’m normally into dance and Electronic music.  I’m not sure why, maybe it’s the natural draw to the complexities of the gear required to make such music.  It’s also fun to play at a low level in the office; so low that you can hear the rhythm but not necessairly words or upper register sounds.  This is one of those tracks that is an exception to the thumpa thumpa thumpa that most people normally think of.  It actually rocks.  It’s quite at home being blasted out of car speakers on a warm summer afternoon.

2. ‘Jesus Freak’ - Chasing Victory off ’Freaked: A gotee tribute to dc talk’s Jesus Freak’: It’s a very modern interpretation of the song that still gets to the essence of what made it such a good song a decade ago.  This group does a screamo (forgive me if I get my genre wrong) version of the song that breathes some very fresh life into the song.  It culminates in a very low, distorted drum backing the lyrics ‘People say I’m strange, does that make me a stranger that my best friend was born in a manger?’  Too fun…

3. ‘Let the name of God be high’ – Derek Webb from Songs from the Voice, volume 1: please don’t make us sing this song: The CD as a whole is the best disc I’ve heard this year so far.  It’s a mixture of people re-interpreting the Psalms and setting them to music. I would say the whole CD is on my list, but this song in particular stands out because of listening it to it a couple of nights ago as the sun was setting in the sky and I was outside doing yard work. It was a very worshipful moment.

4. ‘Dirt off your shoulder’ – Jay-Z from The Black Album:  I read The Hip-Hop church earlier this summer and I’ve been a closet fan of hip-hop for a little while but like all good music I like good hip-hop speaks to human nature; lyrically it paints of a picture of a fallen world that needs and asks big questions.  ‘Dirt off your shoulder’, for me, is just a really fun song to drive to.

5. ‘Wedding Day’ – Rosie Thomas from When we were small:  A music snob friend of mine got married a couple of weeks ago and I did sound for their wedding.  The music included another track off this disc called ‘Have you seen my love’.  If that isn’t the best track, then ‘Wedding Day’ is.  Rosie has an exceptional voice and the music reminds me a bit of Over The Rhine and The Innocense Mission.

6.  ‘Dramatica Mujer’ – Jason Mraz/Alex Cuba Band from The Target Red Room: vol 1: This one is in my morning playlist over at the right and has been in the iPod for the past couple of weeks because it’s a blast to play at 6 a.m. on the way to Dennys for a book study.  It’s great to sing along to (except for the spanish parts which I don’t know…) and I would definately recommend downloading if you find it.

7. ‘Believe’ – The Echoing Green from the self titled release:  It’s a majestic, loud, guitar driven song that is just beautiful…again this just is incredible to play at dawn on Wednesday mornings. Lyrics are available here.

As far as my victims go? I’ll be picking them shortly :) .

two songs I did sound for this weekend.

MJ, A-man and I went to a wedding this weekend for some newer friends of ours who are a really fun couple.  The groom fronts a local band in town and is really talented.  Well, in addition to attending I did sound for the wedding as well; it was just a pleasure to do.  Of interest, my dear friend Tyler played guitar with his new Takamime guitar that had a really advanced pickup in it that made it a joy to eq (and I’m not being sarcastic).  The soloist sang two songs and did them exceptionally well:  ‘A living prayer’ by Alison Krauss and Union Station, and ‘Have you seen my love?’ by a new singer to me named Rosie Thomas.

There are moments that I stand with Eric Liddel when he made the comment ‘When I run, I feel God’s pleasure’.  There are sound moments that just all is right with the world and doing sound is a pleasure that is just unmatched.  This was one of those times…
